Industrial Art Nouveau / Art Deco Inspiration

Upon looking at the industrial area of town in Parnell, i wanted to for the inspiration for my conceptual design to play on the idea of modernity, creativity and an industrial element that would give a sense of movement and design style to my light.

Artists and art works themeselves are extremely valuable ways of finding and effectively using different stylistic forms as a basis for architectural work and Shaun Tan's childrens (dark) picture book, "The Rabbits" does that. Talking metaphorically about the arrival of the rabbits "the Brittish" to Austrialia and their use of somewhat eclectic taste of modern/ancient industrial technologies and building techniques, the rabbits takeover the land of the natives through these machines.

This kind of mixture between the industrial and the new was extremely evocative to me, especially regarding the placement of the site, with the meeting place of contemporary apartment blocks and the older nature of the Old Auckland Railway station and the Old Railway Hotel across from the park, while also the idea of europeans coming in and reclaiming the land of the site from the ocean between the wharf and the rising hill slope towards Anzac Rd. This idea emphasized through the grandeur of the old buildings, the extreme importance and influence of these old beaux-arts buildings and art deco sites on the feeling of the area and a proposal for a lamp design to be created that would aid to both get influence from their styles but also create a stylistic exaggeration that would aim to reflect the type of light that comes through them. The light design should aim to reflect the timelessness but also new idea of modernity, with Tan's "The Rabbits" as an influence of this duality.
